Jonette Murray has created a meaningful exhibition that explores the effects of violence against children in New Zealand.
“The violence children experience in N.Z is unacceptable. In order to change this we must face our own issues head on, and ensure that our legacy to our children is one of love, not suffering.”
Based on research and her own experience of a violent childhood,
Jonette’s still life paintings utilize symbolism to portray subjects that are difficult to broach, allowing the viewer to quietly contemplate and engage with the works. The artwork focuses on the violence children typically encounter and the aftermath that often haunts victims throughout their lives. The process of healing needed is also depicted, taking the viewer on a journey of both understanding, and hope. The marbles in the paintings represent the lived experience of the artist.
“I wanted to give voice to those who have been unheard,
lost or forgotten.
To capture the things I have struggled with,
to purge them artistically,
and to no longer participate in the silence that is born both of shame
and demanded by those who harm.”
Viewer discretion is advised. Some viewers may find the artworks triggering.
Exhibition held at Whirinaki Whare Taonga between November 26th 2022 - February 19th 2023.
